Spruce took aim with an inky spear
Tree poems in alliterative verse
An encounter with trees as heroes, sages, and everyday neighbours.
TREES have been our friends and occasional foes in times both great and small – at history-altering events, in our myths and fairy tales, and during our most intimate moments of reflection. Whether assisting the Buddha on his journey to enlightenment, helping Robin Hood hide from the Sheriff of Nottingham, or gazing at the stars with us in our own backyard on a summer night: trees have tales to tell. Each of the 62 short poems in this collection features a different species and presents a brief sketch in pithy, imaginative alliterative verse. Often philosophical, sometimes joyful, and occasionally challenging and discomfiting, the poems reveal trees as characters in our lives and stories.

Poetry inspired by botanical folklore and natural history.
